Signs that Wax is Burnt?

My current wax seems to be behaving strangely/deteriorating (less stiff/flakey and it wears off quicker). I did heat it more than intended once but not to smoking - so my question is: what are the signs that you’ve burnt your immersion wax?

The wax (homemade mix of paraffin and molybdenum disulfide) is not discolored, it doesn’t have an odor, and seems to be fine at first glance. I’m probably going to replace it anyway, but I wanted to know how people know when they’ve screwed up a pot of wax.

It will go a bit yellow if overheated.

I’ve overcooked some wax once and the most prominent sign was that it smelled weird forevermore.

I ended up with a temperature controller for my cheap slow-cooker wax pot. Worth it for worry reduction. I just had to weight the temperature probe to keep it submerged.

This is the answer. So convenient. I just wish it went up to 125C for the Silca strip chip.
