Roval Terra cockpit + Garmin 1050 + Niterider light combo on gravel: Too much weight for 1 bolt mount?

I’m setting up Crux 5 with a Roval Terra cockpit and I’m a bit paranoid about the single-bolt computer mount interface.

I’m planning to run a Garmin Edge 1050 and a Niterider Lumina 1200 on a GoPro adapter underneath. Total weight is sitting around 333 grams hanging out on that single M4 bolt.

Given how rough gravel can get, this feels like a ton of leverage and shear stress on one tiny bolt. I’ve heard rumors of these stock mounts snapping or sagging over time on rough roads.

Is it worth using a steel bolt, consider a different mount, etc? Appreciate any feedback..

You could loop the Garmin lanyard around the bars, just to be safe

The supplied screw is not steel?

The load on the screw will be tensile and 333g hanging out there to an M4 screw is negligible.

Not sure about the rumours you’ve heard, but physics wins every time; it’s why designs like this are based on calculations and testing and not opinions.

From looking at it, I wouldn’t worry about the bolt snapping under tension. I would look at what it threads into, and make sure it doesn’t loosen(threadlocker?) Any play with a load and vibration would be bad.

Based on the reviews from the link, that would give me pause.

To be honest, I’m surprised by the level of uhm “confidence” (to avoid using a word that not as nice) of some of the earlier answers. At least with prior versions of the Roval cockpits (talking about the Rapide and Alpinist) there were numerous reports of this happening. I actually own three bikes with these components (1x Rapide, 2x Alpinist) and I do use the backup lanyard on every single ride. But yeah, if physics are right every time then we might face a conundrum here. Long story short: Personally, I wouldn’t run a heavy bike computer and a somewhat heavy light on this design.

I’d like to know what actually fails. Does the mount arm break? Do the threads in the handlebar strip? What material is the threaded insert? I don’t doubt that the mount can fail, but I would be surprised if the bolt was the weak point.

I’ve had some relevant experience with the one bolt Roval rapids cockpit and don’t recommend you put too much weight on the out front mount. I have an SL8 with an integrated bar. I attached a hammerhead Karoo and GoPro 11 to the barfly and had the stock bolt snap while I was riding on a mildly bumpy gravel road.

The bolt broke inside the bar so Specialized warrantied the bar (on condition that the shop show proof that they destroyed the bar - what a waste) and my mechanic provided me with a steel bolt (assuming stock was aluminum?). I figured that I was asking too much by riding a road bike on bumpy terrain and that a steel bolt and sticking to paved roads should prevent further problems.

I was wrong. Nine months later I am descending Angeles Crest in LA with hammerhead and GoPro attached and guess what, bolt snaps again. I am clearly dense that I didn’t learn my lesson the first time. The good news what the bolt snapped in front of the bar so it was able to be removed.

Disappointing for a premium bike. The one bolt out front mount is not a robust design and I wouldn’t recommend putting anything with weight on it.
