Pro racing quote search

Hi,

I am looking for the origins of a quote that has been on my mind for a few weeks now.
But I can’t figure out where I picked it up and who it is by.

It is: “I have not yet felt the chain today.”
Context from what I remember: A rider, presumably a doper in the infamous era, boasted about his good (“well prepared”) legs in a race.

Has anybody an idea?

Best wishes
Jonas

It’s a very old Flemish saying, so translations into English vary. I remember many riders saying it in the 1980s and 1990s - eg Erik Breukink, Sean Kelly, Eric Vanderaerden, quite a few of the Mapei guys. But I think the origins are long before then

Well, on that occasion there wasn’t a chain to be felt.

Magnus Bäckstedt said that to a team mate of his during the Paris-Roubaix he won.
