OK, this might be wishful thinking, but the design and placement of the new charging port makes me hope that it could be used either with a central battery, or with a battery on the derailleur. Maybe the derailleur battery would be used with a 1x setup, if there isn’t a similar port on the front derailleur.

I’ve got it from a very good source that what your saying is likely to be true.

A clever workaround of the SRAM patent if true. At first I wondered why the pin arrangement would change vs 12s, requiring an entirely new charging cable for seemingly no reason.

What’s not to love about internal batteries that last month(s) and give an accurate remaining battery life on your Garmin (all my SRAM batteries are 🔋 then 🪫.

Yeah I’m definitely Team Internal Battery due to battery life and aesthetics, but also Team Everyone Has Preferences And It’s Nice They Can Choose. Given the responses to previous reporting, it seems most people want external batteries.

If it’s marketed as a feature then they will fall for it. People MUST HAVE the latest, because everyone assumes the latest is the best.

A derailleur that could use either an external or internal battery would be quite the feature. Even better if you could use the 2x setup with an internal and then carry a spare external battery if needed. That would be next level for some use cases. NOT that I would buy immediately, but would definitely give me a reason to perhaps try Shimano again for my next bike.

I can see that using an internal battery and having a small, spare, emergency external battery would be handy for some folks like bike packers etc.

As long as it was light. As an emergency item it wouldn’t need to last more than a few days.

Maybe there is one battery on the rear deraileur and a wire connecting the front and rear deraileurs.

That was not what the spy shots of the new rear mech previously circulated showed. In those photos, the mech had no battery at all, or at least no way did it have a big enough battery to power both mechs.

Unless that was a red herring, with Shimano using an interim approach with the in frame battery being used for that particular round of testing, but I don’t see shimano doing that given their history of only putting stuff onto pro bikes once it’s pretty much ready to go.

I think pretty much any electronic drive train, maybe with the exception of Campagnolo, can be hooked to an internal battery, that is how it is done on many ebikes at least.

And Sram. Shimano is the outlier here.

I no nothing about ebikes. They need their own drivetrains. Putting DA on an ebike is a huge waste of money.

IIRC There is wiring/a way to to integrate an ebike battery into a DI2 system, however it’s rarely used.

I do have an e-bike with integrated Di2 shifting, but for an internally geared hub. Probably cargo bike riders are not the target customer for Dura-Ace, but I can think of a few thousand E-Giro participants (or whatever it’s called) that would be interested.

Regardless, probably not the primary goal of this new system.

Why? What’s wrong with wanting to have a top end road bike with a top end groupset, just with a little bit extra assistance? Thanks to the Mahle hub system there are some pretty nice e-bikes on which a Dura Ace groupset would not look out of place.

For me Dura Ace is a huge waste of money full stop, but I’m quite happy for others to chuck their money at it.
