In moving my good wheels to my 12 spd bike is it just as simple as swapping cassettes? I seem to have an alignment issue where the chain won’t go all the way to the biggest gear, but at the bottom it shifts the chain off the cassette. Do the axle end caps need to be swapped as well to get everything lined back up? Did I accidentally bend the derailleur hanger on my 12 spd bike while either mounting or taking the bike off the turbo trainer? Or is this just as simple as adjusting the limit screws? My LBS is closed today, curious if I can solve this with the help of the EC community on my own.
Axle end caps only change if the frame/axle standards differ - assuming both bikes are 12x142mm, no need to change those.
So yeah, should just be a matter of swapping the cassette. Make sure you took everything off with the old cassette - the 11-34 11 speed cassette includes a 1.85mm “low spacer” which needs to come off. 12 speed cassettes include a narrower “adhesive ring” that goes on in the same place, although this should be stuck to the sprocket unit.
It is somewhat normal to need to re-index when changing wheel sets, due to tolerances in wheel manufacturing affecting exactly where the cassette sits wrt the derailleur. A bent derailleur of course won’t help the matter - but presumably would have affected your shifting on the wheels you had been using on the 12 speed bike?
Oh come on! That’s mean! I want to know what we’re not talking about now! ![]()
