LBS Monkeying

Here’s today’s entry:

Shoutout to the LBS owner who put this eMTB chainring lockring on with an impact driver. He came to the customer’s house to do it. I guess he couldn’t be bothered packing a 45Nm wrench :man_shrugging:

That cheat bar is half a meter long. I had to stand on it with roughly half my weight - the frame was flexing like a yoga teacher as was the wheel, and the 4-pot brakes struggled to hold the wheel still despite being strapped hard down. I was seriously worried it would permanently damage the motor/frame.

It wasn’t moving, so I poured about half a can of Shock Unlock onto it. Then it broke loose - with a gunshot crack.

I reckon it took over 200Nm to break it free. The spec is 45.

Well done Yamaha for making motors tough enough for reality. Yay bike industry :man_facepalming:t3:

…I’m now wondering do I need to buy a 500Nm impact wrench to have in the event this sort of stuff turns up again. @Dave_Rome what say you? Would an impact wrench be a safer bet for this sort of thing than a cheat bar?

Moral of the story? Never underestimate the cack-handed agriculturalism employed by the last edjit to touch the bike you’ve been handed.

Nicely done.

Impacts are awesome to have for undoing stuck things! However in this scenario, I’d be concerned about the impact damaging some of the internal components, such as the torque sensors. Same reason why I don’t recommend impacts on power meter cranks.
