I have ultegra r8170 12s Di2 and use the etube app to index. Just wondered if people have any tips for precise alignment? Are there any tools? My eyes aren’t great and the listening approach seems a bit subjective. Thanks

Thanks. I was doing the same as that but using the app. I just find the “micro adjust until noisy” a bit subjective and wondered if there was a better way. Maybe not!

Do the indexing adjustment when the chain needs to be lubed. A newly immersion-waxed chain will be noisy at every indexing position while recently drip-lubed chain will mask the subtle noise Shimano wants you to hear before shifting the position five times toward the smaller cogs.

If the issue is towards one extreme of the cassette it’s likely to be a hanger alignment issue.
One way to check visually from behind the bike is to compare the lateral gap between the chain and the adjacent larger sprocket in the second smallest and second largest sprockets. If there is a small air gap in the second smallest but no gap in the second largest (ie the chain touches the larger sprocket) then the hanger is bent inwards.

I ran the “make it noisy then 5 notches adjustment” approach and by chance it was due a drip wax top up. Doing that and then doing the wax has made it pretty good. Good tip that i followed by accident (thanks)!
The conclusion seems to be that there’s no magic tool or method, just the prescribed shimano way.
