Everesting segment advice

I’ve started thinking about doing an everesting and I’ve identified two climbs that could work potentially. One is a completely separated from traffic, it’s wide, tarmac is perfect - but it’s right next to a fairly large road (2x2 lanes). The other option is in the middle of nowhere, very little traffic but it’s got pretty bad surface and I could definitely wouldn’t been able to descend as fast as on the other road.

I am inclided to use the first road but I was wondering if the proximity to a busy, major road (and thus breathing in all sorts of nasties for 15-16 hours (I’m not fast) might not be the best idea.

Any input from the hive mind?

I would go ride each one for an hour or so and see how they feel and how much elevation you get done. That would be a good thing anyway for pacing and other logistics.

There is a really good ride in Santa Barbara that is actually right on the freeway. It does seem hard to believe.

I back Clint’s suggestion. Always good to log a bit of time on each of your climb options. There are always things you’ll discover that you love or hate about them. I’m always trying to think “can I see myself riding this for 10 hours” and the answer is sometimes yes, but sometimes no!

As Andy and Clint have said, with the added consideration of “will I feel safe in the middle of the night and being super fatigued?” (if riding at night)

That sounds like a great idea, thanks!

Good point, might opt for the traffic-free option!

I assume this is THE Balint Hamvas, photographer extraordinaire and creator of the fantastic Cyclocross annuals and VeIofocus Road Books (of which we have several)? :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I’d choose good tarmac over good air as when I’m 12 hours in and riding by artificial light I wouldn’t want to be trying to rely on my concentration to avoid potholes.
