I’m a simple creature — when it comes to bikes and kit, looks are a pretty big part of the equation for me (doesn’t it for all of us?).

I’m looking for winter gloves for the 0–5°C (32–41°F) range that are as un-bulky as possible. The reality often seems to be quite different from the product photos: the glove is nicely stuffed and shaped for the photos, so it looks great, but once it’s actually on your hand, it’s all floppy and loose, which is a bit disappointing.

I have a feeling that the good-looking gloves tend to top out at around 5–15°C (41–59°F), but I’m not ready to give up just yet.

Any recommendations based on your own experience?

Thanks!

I’ve been using these gloves for a few years now and they work well and feel and look slim for the use case category. They look less bulky in person than in the photos (or maybe mine are just old and lost some loft). I use them for cold CX and some winter riding. Unfortunately they seem out of stock, but you might find them on a 3rd party site or shop since 45 North is a QBP company. I’m in the US. I found Toko Gloves many years ago upon a post by CX dude Adam Myerson and really like them. They have MANY options and it can be confusing as to which glove is appropriate for what however they do have many options to cover cool riding to really cold conditions. They mostly come in black and offer a wide range of sizing. Of note, the rain glove was pretty bad. I found it to allow water in and then trapped it creating a glove full of water. I have the Thermo Race and Thermo Plus for conditions that are too cold for DeFeet gloves, 0°-7°C. I seldom ride when it’s below freezing.

Oh, I think we’re on slightly different wavelengths here. When I say _non-bulky_, I really mean **non-bulky gloves**. Slim and sexy. 🫦

Just consider that I’m actually thinking about the MAAP Power Shield Gloves, and I’m still worried they might be too bulky/floppy — I’ve failed to find a good photo of them being worn online.

Do you want your hands to look slim and sexy, or do you want them to be warm? That temperature range for bike gloves is going to require at least some bulk to them for insulation, otherwise they won’t do the job. Gloves for cross country skiing may be your best bet, and some models designed for cold weather skiing (say, 0 to -5C) would be good for cycling in the warmer range you are ralking about, without being too bulky.

Maybe you want a lightly windproof glove layered with a rubber glove underneath? That would certainly preserve the sleek lines. Handske in the U.S. is a small clothing company out of Texas that has a “surgical glove” fit philosophy. They make a surprisingly good, slim-fit windproof shoulder season glove. But even those begin to fail the task around freezing.

As suggested by a couple others I think the XC ski glove offerings are the best place to look but warmth WILL add bulk as Ben says. I found I really liked Hestra’s offering when my local XC shop was stocking them last winter.

OK, not sure how to accomplish warm and sleek/thin but maybe look at electric warmers. I have no idea what is offered in that realm other than I know it exists.

They’re also 100% waterproof as I’ve (unfortunately) been completely caught out in a storm with them. Pretty lightweight, look good, slim, very good grip.

Warning! Because of their tacky grip parts on the palms, they tend to work themselves out of your pockets if you don’t have em stuffed in there completely. Ask me how I know.

They’re good enough I’ve bought them twice

Slim and sexy. Easy.

I’m not sure how thin, race-oriented XC skiing gloves (everything else feels too bulky/floppy) would hold up. After all, your fingers are constantly working when cross-country skiing.

Well, the MAAP or the Giro gloves mentioned by Derek are probably very close to what I’m looking for. Basically, I just don’t want my cycling gloves to look like they’re meant for a snowball fight.

Hestra’s offering looks cool tho.

Blivet sports, Quebec City small Business and if you don’t know, Quebec gets real cold. They are designed there… Not some guy in California who doesn’t know what cold is

I have the Manni v2.0, and they are awesome and in the winter (in Canada) I use them as driving gloves they sit good at 0°C in the spring.

Everyone suggesting XC ski gloves is right that those offer tighter glove fit (if you buy racing gloves, at least) and a decent amount of insulation. I have a pair of Swix gloves made from GORE Infinium that fit like a second skin and I find them to be windproof and comfortable down to -15 C.

Unfortunately I think XC ski glove construction isn’t really conducive to cycling use. They tend to have a leather or synthetic leather palm for wear resistance, which doesn’t always work well for gripping handlebars or brake hoods. Some XC ski gloves also have a kind of gusseted thumb inset that works great for gripping a ski pole, but I find it really presses into your palm when cycling; very uncomfortable.

Nordic ski gloves are indeed great.

But fundamentally you’re talking about temps that are cold enough that some bulk is necessary. You simply need more stuff between your hands and the air.

For 0 to 5C a little bulk is needed as a thermal barrier to the wind. Do you have any local shops that sell gloves you could try on?

Well, it’s 2026, and I’m pretty sure that with a little bit of magic like Gore-Tex Infinium and Polartec you don’t actually need to ride around looking like you’re wearing oven mitts. See MAAP Power Shield, Castelli Perfetto, etc.

I’d recommend giving it a try. It might even help with the unnecessary sarcasm.

Interesting choice. Isn’t there a risk that they’ll lose grip once the silicone print on the inside starts wearing off (assuming it does)?
