Issue with a friends 1040 it stopped working on his ride. Could tell the screen would work cause a dash would appear through the screen.
I plugged it into a computer and it booted up but when I unplugged it the screen went out.
Firstly, let’s get the stupid thing out the way….. has it been left plugged in to charge?
If left to charge for a while, and still the problem persists, I’m going to guess that the battery is dead. When plugged to the PC the unit pull draw power from the computer, and it will be enough to power the unit and charge the battery, only in this case, it seems the battery either isn’t being charged or isn’t holding charge.
To confirm this theory, the unit should power on when plugged into a usb charger of any appropriate kind.
Does the charge percentage increase if left to charge. If not, that would also be suggestion of it being a dud battery.
The fact it says 70% charge isn’t necessarily a true reflection. I’ve had phones that go down to half or more capacity and then just drop off a cliff or die instantly.
Have you tried doing a firmware update? This should be possible with it plugged in and ‘charging’, and I’m assuming it’s not already on the latest firmware. I doubt this will help, but worth a try.
Unfortunately though, I suspect the unit will need replacing. Is it within two years of purchase? If yes, you could try contacting Garmin in the hope of getting it warrenteed.
